Hello Thursday. March 28 2024 Tomorrow, the Boston Common will have a special guest arrive for the holiday season from over 660 miles away. This year's evergreen tree marks the 50th anniversary of the Tree for Boston + 104 years of friendship between Nova Scotia and the City of Boston.
The partnership between the two cities began in 1917, when Boston provided emergency assistance to Halifax — the Nova Scotia capital — after a maritime explosion devastated its harbor. The first Tree for Boston donation dates back to 1971, courtesy of a man named Joseph Slauenwhite, a resident of Lunenburg County in Nova Scotia. Before making the journey to Boston, there was a tree-cutting ceremony in Orangedale.
This year’s tree was donated by L’Arche Cape Breton Community, a non-profit organization that creates safe + supportive homes and meaningful work for people with disabilities.
Around 11 a.m. on Thurs., Nov. 18, the Boston Parks Commissioner, an official Nova Scotian town crier, Santa Claus + local school children will welcome the tree at its final destination near the Boston Visitors Center, located at 139 Tremont St. Wood you believe that the City of Boston has held a tree lighting event on Boston Common for 80 years?
Save the date for the Official Tree Lighting ceremony on Thurs., Dec. 2. The annual free event will take place from 6-8 p.m. and if you can’t make it in person, it will be broadcast live on WCVB Channel 5 at 7 p.m. Pro tip — the tree will be lit at approximately 7:55 p.m.
Who's ready to get lit? Share this with your holiday lights lovin' + hot chocolate sippin' pals who will be with you to see this tree light up the Boston Common.

#BOSTODAY
We all know how the saying goes — reduce, reuse, and recycle. Did you know that you can recycle textiles (think: socks, sheets, towels, etc.) in these new blue city drop boxes?
After these items are donated, they are sorted to be resold; cut into rags for various industries, bars + contractors; or ground into commercial grade insulation.
